So, I didn’t save a ton of money tonight, but this can prove that with “strategic shopping”  it is still possible to save money.

Once again I bought lots of fresh produce.  We canned another 30 pints of homemade salsa 🙂

I think we started out with almost 5 gallons of tomatoes and then needed lots of  onion, peppers, cilantro, black beans, lime juice & corn.

It is hard to gauge what our savings is with homemade items.  The cheapest I have gotten salsa was around $1.25, and that required a sale & triple coupon sale.  I think we have maybe $.75 invested into each jar of salsa.  So not a huge savings, but it is delicious and I KNOW exactly what went into each jar!  My family can eat some salsa.  On a normal week we might eat 1 pint…and sometimes more depending on how often we eat Mexican!   Salsa is really healthy and I am content when my kids keep spooning in on.  Even my oldest who wouldn’t willing eat a tomato will eat salsa left & right!

Okay so I need a way to determine our savings.  I am going to base my savings on strawberries from the store averaging $2. a pound.  I know they go cheaper during this time of the year, but I think this should cover myself okay b/c we frequently  buy frozen strawberries and they might not be as cheap as $2. a pound.

Not all of the strawberries are pictured.

We picked 145lbs of strawberries…

NO, you did not misread that.  I just grabbed lots of bins & had no idea how much volume/weight they would hold!

Our goal was 100lbs, so obviously we hit that 🙂

So what did we do with all of those berries?

We froze about 80-90 lbs of berries and made 24 pints of jam.

The strawberries are taking up about quite a bit of space in my very large chest freezer!

FYI  I didn’t include my savings for making our own jam.  I might come back later and add the potential savings just for my own records!
